Meals on Wheels

Today, I read a post a friend shared about Meals on Wheels, which is yet another program that the Trump administration is proposing should lose government funding.

I posted it on my mom’s Facebook wall with this note:

I remember going with you to MoW and how many of your friends used to volunteer there too.

At first, I didn’t get why you did it and admittedly often got little-kid-skeezed-out (by unfamiliar sights and smells) when I went with you as a child.

But seeing you interact with such love and kindness struck me, even then, and even though I didn’t know why or how you came to care so much about people who were older or less fortunate (or realize it was something you’ve done in many ways your whole life), it showed me how important it was to be caring and friendly and talk to other people like humans.

At that point in my life, I looked up to you as this fancy adult realtor mom lady, and yet you’d show up in these “disadvantaged” homes and apartments and talk to people decades older than yourself without a hint of judgment or impatience or disinterest.

Hundreds of people have been touched by your volunteering and work over the years, and it’s much more than just the food (though that’s damn important) that they remember you bringing into their homes and lives.

I’ve hated the idea of Trump as President since the moment he began his campaign as a joke, not least because of how much he abhors and abuses anyone who is not a rich, white man like him.

But to see his followers cheer on his legislation and comments, and to have other politicians support him, knowing full well that he and his actions are harmful and racist and dangerous, has been disappointing and infuriating.

People need to stop committing to blindly following a person and stop pushing forward with bad policy in an effort to justify past mistakes and stop clinging to party names as a rule and excuse for inhumane actions and STEP UP FOR THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE HUMAN BEINGS OF EARTH.

It’s simple. It’s about the people.
